Black-Cheeked Ant-Tanager

Physical Characteristics
 
  • Around 18 cm in length

  • Adult male and female are similar but a female is slightly duller

    • Upperparts dark gray with a tinge of red

    • Black lores

    • Tail is blackish and a little notched

    • Underparts are orange, it is brightest in its throat and it turns to dark grey with pink tinge on belly

Habitat
 
  • Found in the undergrowth of mature lowland forests, streamside woodlands, and older secondary growth

  • Also they have little tolerance for open or human dominated habitat

Songs and Calls
 
  • The Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager makes a variety of sounds

  • Calls are a scolding or scraping with bubbly chatter

  • Contact calls are a chit, chet, or chek noise and are usually repeated twice

Behavior
 
  • They look for food close to the ground

  • Tend to be alone or in small groups

  • They eat insects from leaves and twigs

  • Occasionally they go through swarms of ants to get the prey the ants flush

  • They are described as lively and noisy
