Physical Characteristics

Around 18 cm in length

Adult male and female are similar but a female is slightly duller

Upperparts dark gray with a tinge of red

Black lores

Tail is blackish and a little notched

Underparts are orange, it is brightest in its throat and it turns to dark grey with pink tinge on belly

Habitat
-
Found in the undergrowth of mature lowland forests, streamside woodlands, and older secondary growth

Also they have little tolerance for open or human dominated habitat


Songs and Calls

The Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager makes a variety of sounds

Calls are a scolding or scraping with bubbly chatter

Contact calls are a chit, chet, or chek noise and are usually repeated twice


Behavior

They look for food close to the ground

Tend to be alone or in small groups

They eat insects from leaves and twigs
-
Occasionally they go through swarms of ants to get the prey the ants flush

They are described as lively and noisy
