Puma

Physical Characteristics
 
  • Adult males can be 2.7 m long with a 60-70 cm long tail and weigh 60 to 100 kg

  • Females are substantially smaller

  • Adults are usually cinnamoun to rufous brown and have a white underside

  • Young pumas are spotted and eventually turn to the colors of an adult

Habitat
 
  • Can live in many habitats from temperate, coniferous forests to low, multistrata, and tropical rainforests

  • It can be found from British Columbia to Patagonia

  • Found from around 2000 m above sea level to sea level

  • The national parks they are found in are the Corcovado National Park, Santa Rosa Park, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

Behavior
 
  • The puma is an extremely good hunter

    • It can leap 16 feet in the air

    • Is a good climber

      • Mainly is on the ground however

  • They live to an average of 9 years

  • They require 100-200 thousand ha to support a population of pumas

Other Facts
 
  • The tropical puma is smaller than the puma in temperate North Amerca

  • It is one of the largest cats in the Americas

  • They aren't actually dangerous to humans

    • In the last 100 years only 44 fatal attacks have been recorded

  • Known as Puma concolor in Latin
