Elephant Ear

Physical Characteristics
 
  • Broad crown, sometimes wider than it is tall

  • Narrow, oval like, and feather leaflets

  • Gray and somewhat smooth bark

  • Has flowers

    • Are small white balls of stamen

  • Has dark red-brown pods

    • Contains about 14 seeds

 

 

Habitat
 
  • Found from Mexico to northern South America

  • In Costa Rica

    • Easily visible in the canopy of decidous and semi-decidous lowland forests

      • Up to 1,300 m above sea level

Other Facts
 
  • Called Enterolobium cyclocarpum in Latin

  • Also known as the Guanacaste Tree

  • The wood is used for furniture, fence posts, and firewood

  • Seeds are used in jewelery

  • Sap and green fruits help medical problems
