Mangrove Hummingbird

Physical Characteristics
 
  • The Mangrove Hummingbird is approximately 10 cm long

  • Weighs around 4.5 g

  • The bill is of medium length

    • Upper mandible is blackish

    • Lower mandible is reddish

  • Upperparts and flanks are golden to bronze-green

  • Throat and breast are bluish-green

  • Belly is whitish with bronze green sides

  • Tail is bronze-green

  • Female is similar to male but instead is mostly white

Habitat
 
  • Is located on mainland Costa Rica

  • Found primarily in mangrove forests

  • Sometimes found in neighboring second growth forest

Songs and Calls

 

  • A "djt" sound that is very fast and sung in a descending twitter

Behavior
 
  • Likes the nectar of flowers from the Tea Mangrove

  • Also eats insects

  • They look for food at middle and lower levels of mangrove swamps

  • Mating season is from October to February

  • Egg is incubated by the female

  • Nest is made from fluff from the Balsa Tree

  • They are an endangered species

    • Due to the destruction of mangrove forests
